The Methodist Church

Hello, and welcome to the autumn 2015 edition of 'East Central News', the newsletter from the Discipleship & Ministries Learning Network in the East Central Region.

The East Central News is a great resource and is designed to help you hear about all things “Learning & Development” in our region.  Through it we have tried to give you a flavour of what’s on the horizon, dates for diaries, resources information, and much more. Please have a read and circulate this information to anyone you know who may be interested.

Our big news this time is that we now have a full team.  Our new colleague Nigel Pimlott is now in post and you can read lots more about him here.

Nigel has spent much of his adult life working with young people, youth workers, churches and community organisations, most notably for Frontier Youth Trust. As a trainer, thinker, strategist and coach he has a passion for mission, innovation, creativity and helping people make a difference in the world.

He has written several books, most notably Youth Work After Christendom, Glimpses, and Embracing the Passion. He currently lives in a village near Newark where he is involved in his local church and community. He is married to Sue, who is a headteacher, and enjoys gardening, cooking, yoga, listening to music and supporting Manchester City. His MA examined models of participation and his PhD considered faith-based youth work and social policy, exploring the principles of human flourishing and the common good.

Connexion-wide news

Sense and Sensitivity

The National Estate Churches Network, an ecumenical network of Christians with ministries to poorer housing estates, is to hold two conferences on 6 and 21 October in London and Leeds. Click on the links to find out more.

Conference 2015:
Sense and Sensitivity: Taking Care with Estate Mission

Whatever our style of mission, there can always be the tendency to offer others what we ourselves think the faith should look and feel like. But what if God wants to offer something different that suits each culture and subculture? So how do we mission with Sense and Sensitivity? How do we Take care with Estate Mission? Just how do we learn what God is already doing in the Housing Estates and get alongside him in it?

This year’s NECN conference will consider the various current takes on mission, check out how each approach can be undertaken sensitively or insensitively, discuss why we might need to be concerned about that, and share many stories and programmes which are attempting to do it right.

Many speakers and practitioners will share their ideas, concerns and challenges so that we hope to come away with fresh insight and lots of new ideas to try.

As always, this conference is for lay people as well as ministers, all denominations and those who work in other Christian groupings. We keep the cost down (still only £20 for the day including lunch and hot drinks) and offer essentially the same one day programme in two venues – one north and one south – to help your travel expense.

Come along, bring some friends, meet old friends and new, and learn how to be a housing estate Christian with pride, and without prejudice.

Core Skills for Family Ministry

http://i.emlfiles4.com/cmpimg/0/9/3/5/1/files/imagecache/6013191/w320_6603334_coreskills.jpg

A brand new resource ‘Core Skills for Family Ministry’ was launched last week. Click here to find out more.

Community Engagement Ideas

One of the challenges many churches feel is how to connect well with the +community in which God has placed them. In recognition of this, the East Central Team has produced a leaflet which gives ideas for engaging with and serving the wider community.  It includes lots of examples of what is working well both in our region and beyond.  It isn’t exhaustive, but our hope is it might just spark an idea, inspire prayer or offer encouragement.   Please download it here and share it with your churches and circuits.

Worship: Leading and Preaching

Revd Tim Woolley has created a brief practical overview of the new Worship: Leading and Preaching pathway.  To have a look at this please click here.

Using Film in Mission

‘...some filmmakers are interested in more than just making money... as genuine artists they invite us to explore the pain and the joy of being human, to look deeply into ethical issues and dilemmas, and at times to enter into worlds far different from our everyday experience…such films help us to understand a little better what it is to be a human being and, in a few cases, even to see a little more clearly the emerging kingdom of God.’  (Edward McNulty, Praying the Movies).

Film can be a rich resource when thinking about some of life’s big questions.  In a previous role, our colleague, Tim Woolley, created a helpful document for Churches who wanted to think about using film in mission.  Guidance is given on thinking about aim, which film to use and how to shape discussion afterwards.  There are also some useful websites and books.  Download it here.

Finally:

So it’s goodbye from us this month. The autumn is a busy time for all of us but we hope you do manage to learn or experience something new during that time.  Please do get in touch if you have any questions or want to know more about what we do.
